Worldline IT Services UK Limited (Worldline UK), a division of Worldline SA [Euronext: WLN] specialising in payment services, has been distinguished in The Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality 2024 list, underscoring its commitment to gender inclusivity amidst ongoing race discrimination trial at its subsidiary, Payone GmbH.
The Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality is a prestigious recognition of companies in the UK that prioritise gender equality within their organisational frameworks. Despite prevailing challenges in achieving workplace fairness, especially amidst economic uncertainties, this accolade highlights Worldline UK’s proactive approach in addressing gender disparities.
For over a decade, Business in the Community (BITC) has overseen The Times Top 50 list, showcasing companies committed to promoting inclusive practices across all genders and identities. Featured organisations have demonstrated significant efforts in implementing initiatives aimed at eliminating pay gaps, promoting career advancement opportunities, and supporting family-friendly policies.
This marks the third consecutive year that Worldline UK has received this recognition, affirming its dedication to fostering an inclusive and equitable work environment.
However, amidst these celebrations, the Worldline Group faces challenges regarding its Germany based subsidiary, Payone GmbH. Recent legal proceedings have brought to light allegations of racial discrimination, including incidents involving ‘blackface’ at a company event in Frankfurt, racially offensive remarks and alleged WhatsApp posting alleged by the claimant to have a Nazi agenda and undertone. These incidents underscore broader cultural challenges within Payone GmbH, contrasting sharply with the gender equality strides recognised at Worldline UK.
Since 2020, Worldline UK according to reports has actively fostered Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Networks, each supported by Executive Sponsors. At the Group level, the volunteer-driven initiative, Worldline UNITE, engages employees across various diversity dimensions, promoting dialogue and cultural understanding through events and webinars. However according to the September 2023 judgment at the Employment Tribunal Payone staff involved in the allegations had no race discrimination related training. The September 2023 judgment which found 2 allegations caused the claimant humiliation and were racial harassment though those allegations which were brought out of time, are currently under appeal at the Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT).
Johnny Astbury, CEO of Worldline IT Services UK Limited and director since April 2023, commented: “We are hounored to once again be recognised in The Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality. At Worldline, we prioritize inclusivity and diversity as fundamental to our corporate ethos. This accolade reflects our ongoing commitment to fostering an environment where all employees can thrive.”
Charlotte Woodworth, Gender Equality Director at Business in the Community, emphasised the broader significance of such recognition: “Being named in The Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality underscores Worldline’s proactive efforts to drive positive change. However, there is still much progress to be made. Addressing inequalities and promoting inclusivity are critical imperatives for all organisations. The business case for diversity and inclusion is clear—it leads to better outcomes for everyone.”
